When global packaging leader Smurfit Kappa needed to enhance logistics visibility and standardize transportation processes across multiple regions, they partnered with e2open. Building on their successful European implementation, the company expanded e2open’s Transportation Management System (TMS) into North America, leveraging Logistics as a Service (LaaS) capabilities to improve logistics operations, enhance customer service, and reduce freight costs across their extensive production network.
The situation
Smurfit Kappa, a FTSE 100 company and global leader in paper-based packaging, operates an extensive network spanning 350 production sites across 36 countries in Europe, the Americas, and Africa. With its two major segments spanning the Americas and Europe, the company manufactures and distributes containerboard, corrugated containers, and various paper-based packaging products.

The challenge
While Smurfit Kappa had successfully implemented e2open’s Transportation Management System in Europe for many years, the North American division faced several logistical hurdles. Limited visibility and reporting hindered decision-making. Short order lead times stressed fulfillment operations, and decentralized plants hampered efficiency. The company needed a scalable solution to support its continued growth, integration between business units, and multi-location complex processes.

The solution
Building on the success in Europe, Smurfit Kappa expanded e2open’s Transportation Management System across North America and implemented a dedicated Logistics as a Service (LaaS) team to maximize the value of the TMS. Additionally, the company implemented Customs Management capabilities for seamless cross-border operations and has been utilizing Restricted Party Screening to enhance compliance and risk management.

The outcome
The implementation of e2open’s TMS and LaaS solutions delivered significant improvements across Smurfit Kappa’s North American operations. Enhanced visibility across internal and external fleets enabled better decision-making. Standardized processes created consistency across previously decentralized operations. The company also saw reduced freight spread through consolidation and optimized routing, and perhaps most importantly, Smurfit Kappa achieved speed-to-value with the e2open LaaS team.
